My career history:
I qualified with the Chartered Institute of Certified Accountants in 1989. During the next two years I concentrated on building my accountancy expertise and I became a key player in the completion of the development and transition of a new General Ledger and Transaction processing solution at PDFM.
In 1991 I ran an innovative solution focusing on operational and regulatory risk mitigation and senior management responsibility. This operated similar to an internal audit function but was visible and delivered in parallel with business strategy. Management supported this structure and set up an Audit Review Committee to evidence this.
In 1993 the solution had developed adequately and been integrated throughout the business that I and my team were incorporated into Compliance. I then became the Compliance Monitoring and Control Manager. After integration and a review and development of the monitoring programme (based on business risk assessment), the next few years saw the development of a highly regarded and robust control division within PDFM.
In 1997 I joined Morgan Stanley Asset Management (MSAM). In a similar fashion to PDFM I spent time reviewing the existing control environment, both in London, its delegated offices and TPA. After implementation of a risk based monitoring programme, I supported the introduction of OEIC’s and was the prime interface with IMRO during a routine regulatory visit. Latterly at MSAM I was part of a small team responsible for review and implementation of a tactical purchase made by MS.
In early 2000 I moved to Barclays Global Investors (BGI), the UK’s largest Institutional Passive Fund Manager. My prime focus during my years at BGI was the integration of N2. My ‘strategic’ focus was on the implication of SYSC, APER & TC during that time. I was instrumental in implementing possibly a unique set up for TC at BGI, with HR and Compliance support and appropriate allocation of responsibility and accountability. That was endorsed by Senior Management.
My other role was of managing the monitoring programme both in London and across its delegated offices and TPA.
During the summer of 2002 I left the city and working with a specialist IT consultancy and set up my consultancy –Business360. The key focus was the delivery of state of the art technical solutions to the public sector. I was instrumental in creating a management structure and supportive of a change in strategy and business culture and branding. My role also covered seeking and delivery of funding to the new proposal. In 2003 we set up a limited company, to deliver the specific business The business USP was delivery of enhanced event registration and marketing solution via utilisation of an innovative touch screen solution.
In 2004,having identified a strategic opportunity, I and my Board colleagues chose to merge the business with another key market player in order to enhance the profile of the business in its’ marketplace. This successful move gave the business an opportunity to continue forward as an even more focused and successful entity. At this stage, I felt that my role as a consultant FD (Finance Director) was complete and chose to move on back to the City.
During 2004 I joined as consultant to FIMAT UK, the brokerage subsidiary of Societe Generale. My focus was to support Compliance in delivering its regulatory monitoring programme focusing on risk mitigation and review of the operational control environment. I completed two business desk reviews – Equity and Bonds – during my time at FIMAT.
Business360 became a limited company in 2005. During Q2 2005, I secured a 3 month contract with a well known Consultancy in their policy unit. At the end of this contract I secured a full time consultancy role with a specialist Fund Management Regulatory and Risk Management Consultancy in London. I have managed and delivered a variety of Compliance focused infrastructure, monitoring and advisory projects as well as managing a significant project in Luxembourg for a pan European large asset manager.
